Symptoms
of Gynecomastia

The main symptom of gynecomastia is enlarged or swollen breast tissue in males due to a hormone imbalance between testosterone and estrogen. This condition can occur in one breast or both. Additional symptoms may include:

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure that removes excess breast tissue in men. It is done to correct enlarged male breasts, which is a common condition in older patients. This procedure removes the excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin. Gynecomastia surgery typically takes 1-2 hours to perform. After the operation, patients experience significant improvements in their chest profile. They look more masculine and get rid of the symptoms associated with gynecomastia.

Consultation & Preparation for Gynecomastia Surgery

The first step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Nesiba. During the appointment, he evaluates the patient’s health history, examines their breast tissue, discusses the potential causes of gynecomastia, and determines if they are a good candidate for cosmetic surgery. Dr. Nesiba also explains various techniques that may be used, such as liposuction, excision, or a combination of both.
The patient is given instructions on how to prepare for surgery. This may involve:

Male Breast Reduction Surgery: Step by Step

Anesthesia

Dr. Nesiba performs this surgery under anesthesia to maximize patient comfort and prevent pain. We provide intravenous medications to keep the patient asleep throughout the procedure. Vital signs are closely monitored. This approach is better than local anesthesia because it offers more comfort for the patient.

Dr. Nesiba makes small incisions in inconspicuous places. These may include:
  • Periareolar – around the borders of the areola; for mild to moderate gynecomastia
The incisions allow the surgeon to access the internal structures, perform liposuction, and/or remove glandular tissue. The type and location of cuts vary based on the specific techniques being used.

Dr. Nesiba performs VASER® liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue from the breast area. This approach involves using ultrasonic technology to liquefy fat cells. A cannula (thin tube) is inserted through the openings to loosen and suction out enlarged breast tissue, helping reduce overall volume. Depending on the individual case, Dr. Nesiba may or may not use liposuction.

Surgical excision involves cutting out excess glandular breast tissue, which is typically the main cause of gynecomastia. Dr. Nesiba uses special instruments like a scalpel and scissors to eliminate it through the incisions.
If excess skin remains after liposuction and excision, the surgeon may need to cut and remove some of it to create a flatter, tighter chest contour. This is more common in cases of severe gynecomastia.
Once the breast tissue removal is complete, Dr. Nesiba seals the incisions with sutures. Proper closure promotes optimal healing and minimizes scarring. The sutures may be dissolvable or need later removal.

Recovery After Gynecomastia Surgery Banner

Recovery After Gynecomastia Surgery

Recovery from gynecomastia surgery takes a few weeks. Patients can usually return to work or school after about 7 days, but strenuous activity should be avoided for a month. We do not recommend lifting anything over 5 pounds for 1-2 weeks to allow the incision site to heal properly.
Immediately after surgery, people wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and support recovery. Discomfort, bruising, and pain are common during the first week. However, these symptoms can be managed with proper medication.
Stitches are usually absorbed over time. If the patient has non-dissolvable sutures, they are removed 10-14 days after surgery. Numbness in the chest area often persists for several months but eventually subsides.
Follow-up appointments allow Dr. Nesiba to monitor the progress. Recovery is gradual, but patients can resume all normal activities within a month. Maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle supports the healing process. Most men are pleased with their improved chest contour by 6 months after surgery when the swelling has fully resolved.

Ideal Candidates for Gynecomastia Surgery

Excess Breast Tissue Growth

Ideal candidates for gynecomastia surgery have significant excess breast tissue that exercise and diet changes cannot reduce. There should be noticeable enlargement requiring surgical techniques to excise and contour it.
Patients considering male breast reduction procedures must be in good physical health. They should not have medical conditions that could impair healing or increase surgical risks. Being at or near the ideal body weight can also improve outcomes.
Men with good skin elasticity tend to have the best cosmetic results from gynecomastia procedures. Their skin can better conform to the new chest contour after excision. Older men or those with diminished skin tone may need additional operations to remove excess skin for an optimal appearance.
Gynecomastia patients should have realistic expectations about surgery results and understand the procedure and recovery process. They must understand that there will be some scarring and a possibility of temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation.
