What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is an ear reshaping surgery performed in order to correct misshapen or prominent ears. During the procedure, Dr. John R. Nesiba reshapes cartilage to create a more natural contour. Then, he repositions the ears closer toward the head for better symmetry. The procedure generally consists of small incisions behind the ears, assuring minimal visible scarring with transformative results. This cosmetic ear surgery is designed to improve self-esteem by balancing facial features. One important thing is that it does not affect hearing. So, the operation can be performed on patients of any age – from kids to the elderly.

Before & After Otoplasty

Otoplasty Techniques

At Flourish Surgical Arts, we provide different otoplasty techniques based on patients’ needs. These involve variations in incision placement, surgical access, and the extent of ear pinning:

Incisionless Otoplasty

This technique does not have any visible incisions on the external ear. Instead, internal suturing is used to reshape and reposition the ear cartilage. Dr. Nesiba reshapes the ear from within, creating a natural contour and a more balanced position. The incision-less approach is ideal for patients with mild to moderate ear prominence and those seeking minimal scarring.
In case of extensive corrections, Dr. Nesiba can resort to the conventional otoplasty techniques. In this case, he makes some little incisions behind the ear so that he can get access to the ear cartilage. After that, he changes the position of the ear and places it near the head. This way, ears stick out less. Traditional method is very common for those who suffer from larger or uneven ears.
3D otoplasty is an advanced method of correction for complex ear deformities. This technique involves multiple layers of sutures to achieve a more three-dimensional, symmetrical ear shape. Dr. Nesiba carefully adjusts the cartilage for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. The 3D approach is especially helpful for those needing substantial reshaping or those who have congenital ear deformities.

Otoplasty Procedure Explained

At the initial consultation, Dr. John R. Nesiba conducts a thorough assessment of the patient’s ears to decide on the best surgical approach. Besides, he listens to their concerns and goals. Then, he develops a personalized approach to the procedure. Dr. Nesiba takes photographs for reference that can help him compare the results after the surgery. Also, a patient undergoes a comprehensive check-up to determine their suitability for surgery. Sometimes, blood tests may be ordered to ensure the procedure is safe.

  • Markings and Anesthesia: On the day of the operation, Dr. Nesiba identifies the incision sites on the patient’s ears depending on the preferred method. Most of these surgeries are done when the patient is under local anesthesia and sometimes additional sedation. Therefore, they do not feel any pain. However, some cases may require general anesthesia.

  • Incisions and Adjustment: Next, our surgeon makes small and very precise cuts behind the ears to reach the cartilage. Dr. Nesiba reshapes the cartilage, adjusts the positioning of the ears, and removes excess tissue if needed, depending on the technique employed. After that, he moves the ears towards the head or gives them a new shape so as to correct any unevenness or protrusion.

  • Closing the Incisions: After achieving the desired look, Dr. Nesiba closes the incisions with fine sutures to minimize scarring. The operation takes around two to three hours. However, this may vary depending on how much work there is to do.

Recovery After Otoplasty

Immediate Recovery

After the surgery is completed, patients remain in our comfortable facility for a few hours. During this time, our specialists monitor them as they wake up from anesthesia. Patients can feel some discomfort, and a minor swelling around the ears is normal. However, we provide all medication and support to ease the recovery process and keep them comfortable.
For the first few weeks following the otoplasty procedure, patients are advised to wear some form of supportive headband or dressing. It supports the ears and helps reduce swelling. Besides, such a “garment”  secures the positioning of the ears while healing takes place. Swelling and bruising can remain. However, most side effects associated with an otoplasty tend to settle within the initial two weeks. In case of any infection, Dr. Nesiba may prescribe antibiotics.
Sutures are removed in 7 to 10 days. Afterward, light daily activities may be resumed. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and any activity that could possibly result in injury to the ears must be avoided for at least two weeks.
Once the ears have healed, the swelling will eventually disappear over time. The final result will be seen after several months. This way, patients receive an improvement in symmetry and positioning of the ears, which greatly improves self-confidence.

Candidates for Otoplasty

Otoplasty surgery is designed for people who would like to improve the look of their ears. The following are some points that would make one a good candidate for otoplasty:

Benefits of Otoplasty

Improved Ear Appearance

Otoplasty might greatly improve the shape, size, and positioning of the ears. It corrects their prominence or asymmetry to create a more balanced, natural appearance that improves overall facial harmony.
Second, many patients note a significant increase in self-esteem following otoplasty. Those with a more proportionate ear appearance often feel more confident in social and professional settings. This way, otoplasty can improve overall body image and self-worth.
In some cases, the surgical reshaping of the ear protrusion or asymmetry can improve the face’s symmetry. The latter is essential in making the facial outlook appealing. So, this procedure can dramatically affect how a person views themselves and is viewed by others.
Otoplasty has long-lasting benefits. The results are permanent once the ears have healed. With proper aftercare, patients can enjoy their new ear shape and position for a lifetime, contributing to long-term confidence.
Many patients after otoplasty feel that they are more comfortable and less self-conscious about their appearance. The surgery can improve general social interactions and even emotional well-being. It helps eliminate complexes about physical appearance.
