Recovery After Breast Surgery

Week 1
During the first week, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medication. If drainage tubes are used, they must be handled carefully before Dr. Nesiba removes them. Limited arm movement is recommended, and strenuous activities should be avoided. Patients must wear dressings and surgical bras to support the healing process.
Swelling and bruising gradually subside. During one of the follow-up appointments, Dr. Nesiba removes all non-dissolvable sutures to allow the body to heal fully. Light activities can be resumed, but heavy lifting and upper-body exercises should still be avoided. Patients usually return to desk work after 14 days of recovery. Residual tenderness or tightness in the chest area is expected as tissues adjust.
By this time, most patients can return to light exercise. Swelling continues to decrease, and scars begin to heal and mature. However, wearing supportive bras without underwires may still be recommended. Follow-up appointments with Dr. Nesiba help monitor progress and address any concerns.
By three months, most swelling resolves, and the final results of the surgery become more visible. Scar tissue continues to soften and fade over time. With Dr. Nesiba’s clearance, patients can resume intense physical exercise. Ongoing care includes regular check-ups and monitoring for any complications.

There is no single best age. Candidates are adults whose breasts are fully developed, who are in good health and who have realistic goals, whether that means adding volume, restoring shape after pregnancy or improving symmetry. Dr. Nesiba reviews your anatomy and goals at the consultation.

During the first week you can expect swelling, bruising and limited arm movement while you wear a surgical bra. Non-dissolvable sutures come out at a follow-up visit in weeks two to three, and most patients return to desk work after about 14 days. Light exercise usually resumes at four to six weeks, and results settle from month three onward.

Cosmetic breast augmentation and lifts are generally not covered by insurance. Breast reduction and reconstruction are sometimes covered when medically indicated, which depends on your plan. For procedures paid out of pocket, we offer CareCredit and Alphaeon Credit payment plans.
